Obituary for Lorraine H. Cheney

Lorraine H. Cheney, 95, went to be with the Lord her Savior, Thursday January 17, 2019, after a life well lived. She had a wonderful 95th birthday party in December celebrating with many family members and then gathering with all her friends at Casco Inn Residential Care Facilty where she had resided for the past two and a half years. The family wishes to thank Casco Inn’s staff and caregivers for the wonderful care she received during her stay.
Lorraine, the daughter of Jesse and Harold Beals, she grew up in Bridgewater and graduated from Bridgewater Classical Institute.
She married Dana Cheney and they settled in Monticello where they raised their five children. Dana owned and operated Dana’s Food Shop and the Miss Aroostook Diner. Lorraine would help with preparations when there were large catering parties. She was a wonderful mother and enjoyed taking care of her family. With five children, she did a lot of cooking and baking; making bread was her specialty. Two days before she passed, she told one of her grandsons how to make bread. No one could top her memory. It was amazing her ability to recall things up until the end.
Lorraine was a woman of faith, and attended the Monticello Wesleyan Community Church. There she enjoyed singing in the choir, Bible studies and good fellowship.
Later in life, Lorraine traveled to Woodstock, New Brunswick and attended cosmetology school to become a beautician. After passing her state exam; she opened up a shop in her house and enjoyed a career styling hair for her local community.
Every morning, she opened the Bangor Daily News to the crossword puzzle and diligently worked the clues to completion. She often would receive calls from other avid puzzlers to help solve the more difficult clues.
She loved to knit as another past time and made beautiful mittens, blankets and other things. Many family members and friends were the recipients of those warm gifts. She once enjoyed making mittens with her friends for the Houlton High School girls’ basketball team.
As a believer in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and loving mother, she relied on prayer and the Lord for guidance. Her favorite verses were as follows: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5&6
Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sister Marilyn McKinnon, and her brothers Edwin and Merton Beals. She leaves her daughters Jacqueline Lord of Yarmouth and Katharine and Glen Garland of Bridgton, her sons, Gary and Cherry Cheney of Cumberland Foreside, Joseph and Carolyn Cheney of Presque Isle, and Dana and Janet Cheney of East Bridgewater, MA, as well as eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at a later date. Interment will take place at Jewell Cemetery, Monticello. Arrangements in care of Dunn Funeral Home 11 Park St. Houlton, ME 04730. Online condolences may be expressed on the Tribute Wall at:
